All that Newport has to Offer

I am not sure if it is just the fact that I am nearing my first September that I am not heading to some type of educational institution.  Summers have always been based around sports and relaxation with the doldrums of August dedicated to to school shopping, summer reading, and anticipation to see old friends again.  However, I believe this lack of “direction” has led me to some type of disinterest in my current surroundings.  I am living back home in a town where many of my friends have moved away, I just returned from probably the most exciting and new trip of my entire life (hopefully not ever, but certainly so far) and work leaves me in front of a computer for most hours of the week.  However, this weekend has completely changed my current sentiment.

Thursday I went out and met Jay, Ben, Andrew, and Gsmitts out for a few drinks which turned into meeting everyone from high school and laxing at Loca shooting pool and hanging out with old friends.  Friday, I tried to work but couldn’t get any work to do as my boss was at Story Land (yup Story Land) all weekend and I couldn’t get a hold of him.  So I went to the beach, caught some rays, and then headed out to go golf with the gang.  Shot well, drank well, and came back for Mensa at the bike shop.  However everyone was on their way out when I got down there until Trout suggested taking out his boat for a night booze cruise and we preceded on cruising around the bay at about 50kts and ripping donuts and kicking up phosforesence (or however you spell the word for glow in the dark jelly fish).  This turned into crossing the bay and docking up to hit up drinks in Jamestown.  This then led to my first and possibly my last time ever being stopped for erratic driving on the seas by the coast guard.  Not nearly as bad as it sounds, but definately as fun as it sounds.

Friday morning waking up with a hangover and a need to clean the house as the Boston gang was coming in to town, I wasn’t all that sure how fun the weekend would be.  But I have to thank Evan, Owen, Jamie, Jarina, and Mallory for making it a blast.  They got into town around 10am and we hit up the beach.  80 degrees with out a cloud in the sky or a breath of wind to knock off the heat, we found our way into the surf numerous times.  Think Caribbean Islands nice, minus the fruity drinks and local music, but the water was crystal clear and perfect.

After the beach we headed to Anthony’s Seafood, a newport staple that houses by far the best New England Clam Chowder I have ever tasted.  I recommend it to anyone that finds their way down to this little island of mine.  Then polo, a completely underrated sport and drinking event.  8 horses plus two refs (also on horses) race around for 6 “chukkas” which is kind of like a period or quarter but obviously sixths.  They race around at full speed slamming into each other and playing a more brutal game of field hockey.  The girls loved the “divoting” as it reminded them of the movie Pretty Woman.  The guys liked the divoting because it gave an excuse to drink beers and wander around kicking grass.

After finishing off a case and deciding we had to get some dinner going we picked up margherita materials and came back to cook out and drink some more.  Nothing like having a group of your good friends, your mom, and her best friend all boozing, listening to tunes, and cooking out.  From there we rolled downtown to OBriens and StarBar and chilled having a few more beers and mainly relaxing.  Newport is good for that, relaxing.  Anyways we get home and everyone passes out.

This morning after cooking up pancakes for the house and taking forever to get going, we headed down to Cliff Walk to see what none of us will ever have, and if one of us does, get me a couch as I will be passing out there all the time.  As a local, I realized I completely take this town for granted, and it was a lot of fun having a few friends from school down and enjoy themselves in a town that I don’t give nearly enough credit.  We will see if it lasts or I move as soon as I find out where I am heading to school.  But as for now, I am going to crack down on LSAT studying and I am heading back to the Cape tomorrow to hang out and get some work done.  I guess I can’t really complain about my current situation.
